Frequently asked questions

Is health insurance mandatory in France?
The state system (Assurance Maladie) is mandatory for anyone working or resident in France. It covers a portion of medical costs. A mutuelle (top-up insurance) isn't legally required, but without one the out-of-pocket costs, particularly for dental and optical, can add up. Most residents take one out.
What is a mutuelle and do I need one?
A mutuelle is complementary health insurance that covers the gap not reimbursed by the state. For a GP visit the gap is small, but for specialist consultations, dental work, glasses, or hospital stays, the difference can be significant. Employers are required to offer a mutuelle to employees, typically with the employer covering half the premium.
Can I insure a French property with a non-French insurer?
Technically possible, but French property law requires certain minimum covers that not all foreign policies include. For apartments, the syndicat de copropriété typically requires proof of insurance that meets French standards. French home insurance is generally inexpensive and straightforward to arrange, so using a local insurer removes any doubt.
