About Schools & Education
Are there English-medium schools on the Côte d'Azur?
Yes. The region has several international schools offering English-language curricula, including British, American, and International Baccalaureate options. Nice, Sophia Antipolis, and Monaco all have established international school options. Places are in demand, and admission processes take time, so contact schools well before your move.
At what age do children start school in France?
School is compulsory from age 3. Children enter maternelle at 3 and start primaire at 6. The academic year runs September to July, with several shorter holiday periods throughout the year rather than one long summer break.
Can my child attend a French state school if we don't speak French?
Yes. French state schools accept all children of school age living in the area. Most schools have a UPE2A programme to support non-French-speaking pupils, though the level of support varies. For secondary school age, an international section (section internationale) in a lycée may be worth exploring if available locally.
