Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners buy property on the Côte d'Azur?
Yes, there are no restrictions on foreign nationals buying property in France. The purchase process is the same whether you're a resident or not, though non-residents have some additional steps: opening a French bank account and arranging a power of attorney if you can't attend the final signing in person.
What fees should I budget for when buying property in France?
Plan for around 7 to 8% on top of the purchase price. This covers the notaire's fees and government transfer taxes. Alpes-Maritimes kept its transfer tax rate at 4.5% when most other French departments raised theirs to 5% in April 2025, so the total here is slightly lower than elsewhere in France.
Do I need a French bank account to buy property?
You'll need one by the final signing. Purchase funds pass through the notaire's escrow account, and a SEPA transfer is typically required. Opening a non-resident account with BNP Paribas, Société Générale, or HSBC France is possible but takes longer than most people expect. Start the process early in your search.
